BERKELEY, Calif. – James Watt and Thibaud Maxant advanced to the Battle in the Bay on September 23-25 at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco as a doubles tandem, with Watt also advancing in singles play.
 
Saint Mary's Men's Tennis competed in two different locations for their opening weekend, with the majority of the squad in Boise, Idaho at the General Patton Invitational while Maxant and Watt played in the Battle in the Bay Qualifier hosted by Cal.
 
The Battle in the Bay Qualifiers were cut short by a day due to the expected rain in the Bay Area on Sunday.
 
The Gaels tandem beat Ryan Lam and Sam Hall of UCSC 8-3 on day one. They then topped Maxim Verboven and Milos Dabic of UNLV 8-1, and defeated Lucas Magnaudet and Alex Chang of Cal 8-4 to advance.

In singles competition, Watt defeated USF's Johan Garpered 6-3, 6-1 and Dusan Rsovac of UNLV, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the elite eight of the tournament. On day two he beat Derrick Chen from Cal 6-3, 7-5 and Andrei Volgin of UC Davis 6-3, 7-5 to move on to the Battle of the Bay.
 
Maxant won a three-set battle against Nikola Kuraica of USF 3-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3 in the round of 32 before coming up just short in another three-set match to Johannes Seeman of SDSU) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16.
 
Back in Boise, the Gaels Diego Jarry advanced to the quarterfinals of the General Patton Invitational, where he also barely lost a three-set battle to Jan Lucca Marquardt of Boise State 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9)
