HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — In just the second event of their collegiate careers, Nya Crump and Chloe Swanson took home first place in the Division A Silver bracket of the Huntington Beach Relentless Collegiate Showdown. Crump and Swanson both competed in the Gaels last event at San Jose State, but this was the first time they played as a pair, and will hope to continue their success as a pair after their strong showing in SoCal.
This duo was one of five to place in the top five for the Gaels at the event. The teams of Allie Cataldo/Sadie Shipman (Division A Gold), Cameron Martinez/Paola Peralta (Division A Silver), Hannah Couch/Hawley Harrer (Division AA Silver) and Karmin Brown/AJ Slojkowski (Division AA Bronze) each placed fifth in their respective brackets.
Head Coach Janice Harrer was quite proud of her group, and had this to say about the performance:
"I'm very pleased with our Huntington Beach performance! All five pairs placed within the top five of their respective divisions against a very competitive field. The offshore wind today had gusts up to 30 mph which was challenging for all players. The Gaels were persistent and gritty as they played throughout the day. The day was highlighted by the dynamic performance of Chloe Swanson and Nya Crump. They won back-to-back consecutive matches to meet up with Pepperdine in the finals. Competitive play and team collaboration led to a 3 set victory and the A division Silver championship for Swanson and Crump!"
The Gaels will wrap up their fall season by hosting the SMC Showdown on the Sand next Saturday, November 4.
