MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's College community mourns the loss of former Gael football student-athlete and long-time athletic department administrator Steve Jacoby. Jacoby was a beloved figure within the campus community and throughout the East Bay. A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 6 on the Saint Mary's campus.
Â
Jacoby was a larger-than-life figure on the Saint Mary's campus since his playing days in the early 1980's. He went on to coach and work at Saint Mary's until the early 2000's. During his time on campus, he played a pivotal role in the lives of countless students. His guidance, support, and unwavering commitment to their well-being were qualities that students carried with them long after they graduated.
Â
In addition to his contributions to Saint Mary's College, Jacoby was deeply ingrained in the Walnut Creek community. Many residents will remember him as the friendly neighbor just around the corner, always ready with a wave and a friendly word. He was not just a neighbor but a friend who embodied the spirit of a close-knit community.
Â
Following his time at Saint Mary's College, Jacoby went on to coach at De La Salle High School for the past two decades. Many parents in the area had the privilege of having their children coached by Jacoby, whether it was in football or another capacity. His coaching style reflected his character: a perfect balance of compassion and discipline. Under his guidance, young athletes not only honed their skills but also learned the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and dedication.
Â
Jacoby recently celebrated his 61
st birthday, days before his passing. The memorial service on Saint Mary's campus will begin at 11 a.m. in the chapel and live streamed in the Soda Center.
Â
Rest well, Steve Jacoby. You will be dearly missed, but your legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to know you.
