MALIBU, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Basketball controlled the second quarter at Pepperdine, which led to a 62-55 win over the Waves on Thursday night.
Â
SMC kept Pepperdine to just five points in the second quarter on 2 of 16 shooting, while shooting 50% from the field themselves and 4 of 6 from three-point range to win the quarter 22-5.
Â
It was the opposite of the first quarter where the Gaels were just 4 of 15 shooting and scored just 9 points. But Saint Mary's started the second quarter on a 10-1 run on their way to the big second.
Â
Taycee Wedin hit a pair of threes in the quarter and an
Aspen Garrison jumper in the paint put SMC up by 15. The third quarter was more of the same, with Saint Mary's going up by 20 on the final play of the third.
Amy West blocked a shot on the defensive end, and
Hannah Rapp sent an outlet pass to Wedin for a layup.
Â
The Gaels had their largest lead with 8:35 left to play on a Bamberger three pointer that made it 54-30, as she did all of her scoring behind the arc, channeling her inner
Taycee Wedin to go 3 of 6 from downtown.
Â
The Waves would trim the Gaels lead to single digits at 61-50, but at that point there were only 44 seconds left in the game.
