SAN FRANCISCO – For the second-straight day USF had a walk-off win against the Gaels, this time hitting a solo home run in the ninth to win 7-6 on Sunday and take the series.
Â
The Gaels stranded nine runners on the day, but led 6-2 after the top of the sixth and 6-4 going into the bottom of the eighth.
Â
They trailed 1-0 going into the third when a single by
Christian Almanza scored
Gavin Napier and a triple to center by
Blake McDonald scored Almanza and
Nathan Chong for a two-run Gaels lead.
Â
The Dons got one back in the bottom of the third, but it came in as the Gaels turned a double play, trading two for one and keeping their lead at 2-1. Saint Mary's would extend their lead out to three runs in the bottom of the fifth when
Nathan Chong blasted a two-run shot (3) out to right field to score
Coleman Schmidt and make it 5-2.
Â
Redshirt freshman
Eddie Madrigal made his second-consecutive start in right field, and drove in a run for the second-straight day in the top of the sixth with a base hit to center to score
Dalton Mashore.
Â
SMC skirted through trouble in the seventh using three different relievers, but weren't able to keep USF off the board in the eighth. The long ball would get the Gaels on a two-run shot in the eighth and a solo homer to lead off the ninth to walk it off on Saint Mary's for the second-straight game.
