WSOC | 2023 Fall Schedule Set for SMC Women’s Soccer

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Soccer has announced their full fall schedule for the 2023 season which features eight home games across 18 total matches.
The Gaels are coming off a 5-6-7 season in 2022. Ties defined SMC's season in the end, but there were plenty of exciting wins that the Gaels can build on heading into the fall.
Saint Mary's started last season on the front foot, winning their first two matches against Cal Poly and Santa Barbara. After a few ties, the Gaels rebounded with one of their best matches of the season against UC San Diego, which saw SMC win 4-2 thanks to a Nayeli Diaz hattrick.
Another season highlight came against Pepperdine on senior night, which saw SMC goalkeeper Taylor Poland record eight saves, including an otherworldly penalty save in the 87th minute to hold on to the draw for the Gaels.
NEW FOES
The Gaels will face a new team for the first time in their history as they'll host James Maddison University at home on August 31. The Dukes are coming off an impressive season going 12-4-5 finishing second behind Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Conference.
SMC will also face Idaho State for just the second time in their history. The Gaels will host the Bengals at home in their second game of the season on August 20. Idaho State are coming off a 3-11-2 season in 2022. The only other time these two teams have met came just a few years ago in 2019 where the Bengals won 1-0 in Pocatello.
BIG MATCHES
With BYU leaving the conference for Big 12, the Gaels won't have to deal with the stubborn Cougars any longer.
Some of the notable matches for SMC include an away match against Stanford on August 27, an away match on October 7 against Pepperdine, and a home match against Gonzaga on October 14.
The Gaels have not faced the Cardinal since 2013, which saw them lose 5-0 in Palo Alto. SMC will look to flip the script when they head to Stanford at the end of August.
Saint Mary's will also host WCC champions Santa Clara on October 4. Last season, the Broncos beat SMC in Santa Clara 3-1 en-route to their third straight WCC title.
Senior day for the Gaels will come in a high-profile home match against WCC stalwart Portland on November 1.
