BRISTOL, Conn. — ESPN's latest edition of the "Way-Too-Early" Top-25 has your Saint Mary's Gaels ranked as #23 in the National coming into the 2023-24 season. The Gaels capped the 2022-23 campaign with a 27-8 record, ranked 19th in the final AP Poll and 22nd in the final USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Gaels look to be led by returning leading scorer and All-American Aidan Mahaney. The sophomore sharpshooter averaged 13.9 points per game a season ago, and shot 40% from three. He will be joined by fellow returning starters Alex Ducas (12.5 PPG, 41.4% 3pt) and Mitchell Saxen (11.6 PPG, 7.6 RPG). Augustas Marciulionis (5.9 PPG, 1.5 APG) headlines a group of four reserves from a season ago who look to make further strides in 2023-24. The biggest question for the Gaels will be finding a replacement for All-American point guard Logan Johnson.
The Gaels split the 2022-23 WCC Regular Season Title with Gonzaga and earned a #5 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. Saint Mary's would go on to defeat VCU in the opening round, before falling to the #4 seed and eventual National Champion UConn in the second round.
