SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Women's Soccer team fell short in their last match of the season to No.11 Santa Clara, 3-0.
FIRST HALF SMC 0-2 SCU
Taking on the No. 11 team in the country, the Gaels knew they had to put up a fight and come out strong. Five minutes into the game, the Broncos scored two goals to take a 2-0 lead over SMC. Lucy Mitchell and Kennedy Schoennauer scored the early goals for the Broncos, beating Gaels keeper
Kate Plachy to the bottom right corner both times.
Plachy and the Gaels defense were challenged throughout the remainder of the half as Santa Clara outshot Saint Mary's 11-3 in the first 45 minutes. The Gaels would have their work cut out for them in the second half down a pair of goals and needing a win for a shot at the WCC title.
FINAL SMC 0-3 SCU
The Gaels knew they had to make some adjustments coming out of the second half, but Santa Clara secured another goal in the 58th minute. There were only five shots taken in the second half, all by the Broncos.
Amari Hicks and
Savannah Schwarze were the only Gaels to play the full 90 minutes of the match, followed by
Khalia Gathright finishing with 83 minutes of action. Saint Mary's will see their season come to an end with a 7-7-4 overall record, going 4-3-3 in WCC play. With more conference games later in the evening, their final position in the standings has yet to be determined but Saint Mary's did tie their program record for most points in a conference season with 15. The last time they finished with 15 points was in 2001 with a WCC record of 5-2-0 under Paul Ratcliffe.
