MORAGA, Calif. — Indoor track season got underway this past weekend, with multiple Gaels competing at the Silver State Invitational in Reno, Nevada. One Gael at the event, shined brighter than silver, as Jaden DeSouza set the gold standard in the 600m race, earning her Shamrock Student-Athlete of the Week honors. She became the first women's track runner to win the award since Rayna Stanziano a season ago.
DeSouza, a senior out of Lihue, Hawaii, not only won the 600m event at the Silver State Invitational, but also set a facility record at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center and ran her personal best by 1:30.53 seconds. No other racer finished within five seconds of her blazing fast time. DeSouza also ran anchor for the Gaels 4x400m relay team, running her leg at 56.11 seconds, the fastest of any Gael in that event.
DeSouza and the Gaels will be off until January 11, when they will return to Reno for the Silver and Blue Invitational.
