WBB | Day 3: Local Travel To Pisa, Florence For The Gaels

FLORENCE, Italy — On its second full day in Italy for the 2024 Foreign Summer Tour, Saint Mary's women's basketball stayed near its home base in Montecatini Terme and took a short bus ride to Pisa, followed by a trip to downtown Florence on Thursday afternoon.
The Gaels' first stop of the day was in Pisa, and many were excited to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa and it didn't disappoint. The team went on a guided tour around the Piazza dei Miracoli, which included climbing the 248 stairs to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, followed by lunch downtown.
Saint Mary's found the Tower of Pisa to be a tough climb up the stairs, as they slant in one direction and cause you to feel off balance as you stand on the top of the tower.
Following a quick bus ride, the Gaels arrived downtown Florence, with the first stop at the Accademia Gallery. The tour included the viewing of Michelangelo's famous statue of David. The view inside of the statue was amazing as the Gaels looked on at the massive work of art.
After the tour, many of the Gaels hit the shopping downtown Florence and enjoyed a wonderful dinner on the crowded streets surrounding the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. The streets of Florence were packed with fans starting to arrive as they host the Tour de France on Saturday morning.
"Exploring the Leaning Tower of Pisa and seeing the statue of David today was a very surreal moment," senior guard Kennedy Johnson said. "It's one of those things where you've heard about them, but never thought you would experience it in person. Learning about the history of everything was even more intriguing. 10 out of 10 day."
Saint Mary's will enjoy a free morning on Friday prior to its first game of the tour. The Gaels will face ASD Basketball at 6 p.m. local time Friday night.
