SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Saint Mary's led by as many as 18 points Sunday afternoon in Jenny Craig Pavilion but were able to hold off a late San Diego surge to take down the Toreros 57-49 for their first conference victory. Addi Wedin and Emily Foy led the charge with ten points apiece as the Gaels led wire-to-wire for their tenth win of the season.
Defensively, Saint Mary's was stout once again as they held the Toreros under 50 points, the sixth time they've done that this season. They did put up 22 points to nearly erase an 18-point deficit but the Gaels went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes to keep them out of striking distance. The Toreros shot just 33% from the field and 12% from beyond the arc, matching their season low. The Gaels will remain in the Bay Area next week to take on Pacific in Stockton on Thursday, January 8th.
FIRST HALF 34-19 USD
Saint Mary's has struggled with consistent scoring over all four quarters this season but got off to a good start on Sunday after scoring just four points in the opening quarter against Pepperdine earlier in the week. They led San Diego 16-8 after the first ten minutes on 43% shooting including a pair of three-pointers thanks to Emily Foy and Ella Wedin. They led by as many as nine points and turned the ball over just one time for a clean opening quarter.
The efficient scoring continued into the second quarter for the Gaels as they built their lead to as many as 16 points, shooting over 60% from the field. Swarming defense held San Diego to 29% shooting and four turnovers as the Toreros had their work cut out for them over the final 20 minutes of regulation. Malia Latu showcased active hands on the defensive end, scoring four points in the quarter including a scoop-and-score to push their lead to 14. Emily Foy also cashed in on a transition bucket after picking off a pass, hitting Addi Wedin in stride for the transition layup.
FINAL SMC 57-49 USD

Despite the drought, the Gaels held the Toreros to eight points for the second time in the game and maintained a 44-28 lead going into the fourth.
