ROME, Italy — In its final full day in Rome, the Saint Mary's women's basketball took it all in during its summer Foreign Tour on Sunday with a trip to Vatican City, ran a youth clinic and played its final game of the tour.
During the morning, Saint Mary's took a team tour to Vatican City, including the historic Sistine Chapel. In the evening, the Gaels faced Lazio Select WPH Academy and cruised to an easy 110-43 victory. Saint Mary's concludes the tour with a 3-0 record.
The Gaels dominated the game from the opening tip Sunday night, and had six players in double figures, including a game-high 18 points from Ella Wedin. Wedin caught fire from the 3-point line and knocked down six threes in the game. As a team, Saint Mary's hit 13 3-pointers.
For the second straight game, Kennedy Johnson had a solid all-around performance, scoring 13 points and adding seven rebounds.
Saint Mary's took advantage of its inside presence and dominated the boards with Edie Clarke leading the way with 14 rebounds and adding nine points. Nadia Bernard had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Mauriana Hashemian-Orr added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Melesungu Afeaki and Emily Foy each added 11 points for the Gaels.
"I think we did really well pushing the ball up the court and getting transition baskets tonight," Clarke said. "We have definitely improved playing together over the three games and it's been visible on and off the court as well."
The Gaels will conclude the summer tour with a two-day visit to southern Italy and the Amalfi Coast, before their flight back to the Bay Area.
