MXC | Gaels Send Veteran Group to WCC Championships

MORAGA, Calif. — After their last regular season race at the Bronco Invitational, the Saint Mary's Men's Cross Country team is set to take on the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, November 1st.
At the Bronco Invitational, the top three finishers for the Gaels all earned personal best times. It was freshman Jackson Woolf who finished first for Saint Mary's. Woolf clocked in at 25:24.9 and shaved thirty seconds off his previous best time. Next in was Diego Urdiales who finished the race in 25:58.0 and improved his best time by forty seconds. Coming in third for the Gaels was Jacob Schuetze as he crossed the line in 26:03.0. Rounding out the scoring for the Gaels were Andrew Perez (26:10.7) and Anthony Sharp (27:17.1).
Competing in the WCC Championships are graduate students Zane Jackson, Jon Fielding Stogner, Jonathan Velasco, Oisin Spillane, and Foster Wilfong. Joining them are seniors Jason Habash and Eric Martinez, along with juniors Divan Du Plooy and Jacob Moffett, and sophomore Aidan Doherty. Of this group of runners, Divan Du Plooy has the fastest 8k time of 23:15.2 which he recorded at the NJCAA Region V Championships while competing for South Plains.
Last season, the WCC Championships took place in Lodi at the Micke Grove Gold Course and the Gaels finished 5th out of 9 competing teams. Zane Jackson, Jacob Moffett, Jason Habash, and Eric Matinez were all top five finishers for Saint Mary's and will all be returning to the race.
The West Coast Conference Championships is taking place on Saturday, November 1st at the Course Spokane Valley in Spokane, Washington, with the men's 8k set for 11:00 AM. The course consists of three loops, featuring grassy meadows, rocky outcrops, and a patchwork of hundred-year-old Douglas Fir.
