KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Saint Mary's set a program record with four United Soccer Coaches All-West Region selections including three First Team selections in Kate Plachy, Amari Hicks and Sydney Middaugh. Savannah Schwarze rounded out the team's selections with All-West Region Third Team honors. Saint Mary's matched Pepperdine for the most all-region selections from WCC schools with four as the Waves also had three first team selections.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Plachy littered her name in the program record book with a career season in 2025, recording 12 wins, 12 shutouts, finishing with 65 saves and a 0.61 Goals Against Average. Plachy was named to the All-WCC First Team and was also named the West Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, one of two major conference awards the Gaels took home as Theresa Romagnolo was named conference Coach of the Year.
Amari Hicks helped anchor one of the best defenses on the west coast, starting in 16 games for Saint Mary's en route to her first career All-Region selection. Hicks possessed great closing speed for a center back and bruising physicality to stand as one of the best defenders in the WCC. As a team, the Gaels only allowed eleven goals on the season for a 0.61 GAA, their lowest marks in both categories in the modern era (2001).
Sydney Middaugh paced the Gaels offense with a team high ten goals, good for third most in the WCC. Middaugh became the second double-digit goal scorer for the Gaels in the last three seasons as fellow teammate Briana Salvetti netted ten goals in 2023. Middaugh played and started in all 18 games and along with her ten goals, finished the season with two braces in wins against San Diego and Oregon State. This was her first all-region selection of her collegiate career.
Last but certainly not least, four-year senior Savannah Schwarze was named to the All-West Region Third Team for the first time in her SMC career. Schwarze was the heart beat of the Gaels midfield, starting in 17 games while scoring three goals and recording a career high five assists. Schwarze capped off her Saint Mary's career with 64 games played as the Granite Bay native was an everyday starter for the Gaels since the 2023 season and was a big contributor to the Gaels success here in 2025.
