MBB | Gaels Head Back East for a Showdown with Davidson
12/3/2025 1:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. — Coming off of their first loss of the season against a very talented Vanderbilt squad, the Saint Mary's Gaels (8-1) will look to regroup with another contest away from the friendly confines of UCU Pavilion, heading to Davidson, North Carolina to take on the Davidson Wildcats (6-1). Like the Gaels, Davidson has just one loss on the year, in an MTE championship game, and is unbeaten at home, as they will prove to be another high-level mid-major test for SMC.

EARLY CONFERENCE LEADERS
Through the first nine games of the year, the Gaels have established themselves as the early WCC leaders in a plethora of categories. As of December 3, Saint Mary's leads the WCC in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense, free throw percentage and free throws made per game. While the defensive stats are not that surprising, as the Gaels led the WCC in those categories last year as well, the free throw stats are extremely impressive, considering they ranked 9th and 11th in those categories last year. Individually, Paulius Murauskas has been to the stripe 73 times and has converted 59, more than any other WCC player, and with that, also leads the WCC with 173 points scored, averaging 19.2 PPG. Joshua Dent has been stellar from the stripe, leading the WCC at 97.3% and Andrew McKeever has set the tone on the glass with 93 total rebounds, averaging 4.44 offensive and 10.3 total boards per game, all conference high marks.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Davidson entered the week with a 6-1 record, and will take on The Citadel on Friday before welcoming the Gaels to town. Head Coach Matt McKillop is in his fourth season at the helm after taking over for his father, Bob McKillop, who led the Wildcats from 1989-2022. The 6-1 start matches the best start in Coach Matt McKillop's tenure, matching the start from his first year at the helm in 2022-23. Despite losing all five of last year's starters, the Wildcat offense has remained efficient as ever, ranking 43rd in the country in field goal percentage (49.9%) and 22nd in three point percentage (39.5%). Leading the charge there has been sixth man Hunter Adam, shooting 61.9% from the field and 53.1% from three, leading the team averaging 12.5 points per game. Adam missed the last Wildcats contest against North Carolina A&T, so it will be intriguing to see if he plays Friday against the Citadel ahead of the matchup with the Gaels. The Gaels and Wildcats have met just twice in program history, with the Gaels taking both of those meetings in 2009 and 2023, both in Moraga. This will be the first meeting in North Carolina.
