SAN BRUNO, Calif. — For the first time since 2017, Saint Mary's Volleyball has had seven student-athletes earn a WCC All-Academic distinction, with Genevieve Bane earning a first team nod, and Abby Castillon, Katherin Gee, Kalikoa Kealoha, Natalie Peete, Tessa Schouten and Madi Zorn all named as honorable mentions. In order to be considered for the All-Academic team student-athletes must:
(a) Maintain a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA) based on the most recently completed term at the time of the nomination.
(b) Be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
(c) Have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution. (True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers may not be nominated).
(d) Participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests.
Genevieve Bane has been the Gaels heart and soul all season. The fifth year redshirt senior led the team with 329 kills, her second straight year of leading the Gaels in that category, all while maintaining a 3.70 GPA pursuing her MBA. After earning honorable mention status last year, this is Bane's first first team All-Academic nod.
A swiss army knife for the Gaels, Abby Castillon has done a bit of everything, with 101 kills, 22 aces, 142 digs and 12 blocks, all while maintaining a 3.46 GPA as a biology major. This is the second straight year that Castillon has been named an honorable mention WCC All-Academic team member.
The Gaels top serving substitute off the bench, Katherine Gee proved to be a valuable piece in this role for the Gaels this year, while maintaining a 3.61 GPA as a business major. This was Gee's first all-academic honor in her first year eligible for it after joining the Gaels last season. She was a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team last year.
Playing at both middle blocker and opposite this season, Kaliko Kealoha has come on strong towards the end of the season, with 47 kills and 20 blocks, all while maintaining a 3.46 GPA as a communications major. This is the first all-academic honor for the sophomore.
Natalie Peete served as the Gaels second libero this season, tallying 70 digs, all while maintaining a 3.86 GPA, the second highest GPA on the team as a health science major. This was the first all-academic honor for the redshirt sophomore.
Tessa Schouten has had an explosive sophomore season from the middle, leading the team in blocking, while maintaining a 3.82 GPA as a marketing major. This is the first all-academic honor for the sophomore.
Madi Zorn continued to be one of the two starting setters in the Gaels 6-2 rotation, ranking second in assists, all while maintaining a 3.81 GPA as a business major. Zorn was named a first team All-Academic honoree a season ago.
