Gonzaga Game Hero Harry Wessels Named Shamrock Office Solution Student-Athlete of the Week
2/3/2025 2:00:00 PM | General, Men's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. — It was a week to remember for Aussie big man Harry Wessels of Saint Mary's Men's Basketball. After an efficient eight points and six rebounds against Santa Clara, the junior was able to be the hero for the Gaels in their rivalry W against Gonzaga. This is Wessels first student-athlete of the week honor in his career.
Harry Wessels put together arguably the most impactful week of his Gael career. Playing a team-high 16 minutes off the bench at Santa Clara, Wessels had an extremely efficient eight points and six boards. He then had arguably the most impactful moments of the game in the Gaels win over Gonzaga. Following a Ryan Nembhard three to knot things up at 58, Wessels got good post position on Ben Gregg with 50 seconds left, and was fouled by the Zags four man, earning a trip to the stripe. Wessels then knocked down both free throw attempts to push Saint Mary's ahead by two, prompting a timeout. The two made free throws were points 299 and 300 of Wessels SMC career, and moved him to 84.6% from the stripe on the year. During the timeout, Wessels later told reporters he let his coaching staff know that if Graham Ike got the ball, "I'm getting the stop!" That is exactly what Wessels did, as Ike backed down Wessels before having his hook shot rejected by the 7-1 Aussie, having the ball go out of bounds off of him as well to give the Gaels possession back with the shot clock turned off. The Gaels would go on to get two more stops with Harry on the floor, ultimately winning the game by two possessions.
Wessels and the Gaels have two more big ones on the road this week, taking on second place San Francisco on the Hilltop on Thursday, and heading to Gill Coliseum to take on Oregon State on Saturday.
ALSO NOMINATED: Francisco Felix Jr. (MTRACK), Emily Foy (WBB), Stefanie Silva (WTEN)
