BVB | Gaels Return to Idaho for Second Straight Year for Boise State Classic

MORAGA, Calif. — Back above 0.500 for the first time since mid-March, Saint Mary's (14-13) will make their third out-of-state trip of the season to the Gem State of Idaho to take part in the Boise State Classic. At the event, the Gaels will renew hostilities with Portland (4-8) and Colorado Mesa (16-7), both of which they have defeated this season. They will also see Cal State Bakersfield (9-15) and host Boise State (14-10) for the first time this year.

A week ago, the Gaels went 3-1, defeating regional rivals San Jose State, Santa Clara and Sacramento State, while falling in a 4-1 decision to ninth ranked Cal. Angelina Bour and Nya Crump stole the show going 4-0 on the weekend from the third flight. That duo has now won five straight matches together, running their season record to 10-6 for the year. Sedona Sherman and Hannah Glick went 3-0 when paired together for the weekend at the fours, as they are now 4-2 for the season. Allie Cataldo eclipsed both the 50 win mark and the 100 matches played mark for her career, becoming the 12th and seventh Gael respectively to do so. She joins teammate Hannah Couch as the second Gael to reach 50 wins this year. Together, Cataldo and Couch are a combined 22-15 for their career, tied for the sixth most of any pair in program history.

The Gaels defeated Portland two weeks ago 4-1 as part of the West Coast Challenge tournament. The Pilots have won just four matches of 12 all season, with only one of those coming against a Division I opponent (Pacific). Led by former Gael Megan Burton, Portland looks to right the ship with seven matches to go before the conference tournament. The top pair for the Pilots, Emily Wood and Annika Stammberger, have gone 6-6 together this year. In nine all-time meetings, the Gaels have never lost to Portland.

The Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield started their season with a pair of quality wins over Pepperdine and Georgia State, but since, have stumbled a bit, running their record to 9-15 on the campaign. Head Coach Andy Fulenwider is in his second season at the helm, and has won 25 matches in that time. Ella Erteltova and Vivi Kaelin have paired up together for the second consecutive season to pace the Roadrunners, going 16-5 together this year after going 28-8 together last season. This will be the third all-time meeting between the Gaels and Roadrunners, with Saint Mary's dropping the first in 2015, and winning their last meeting in 2020.

One of the top AVCA Small College Division programs, the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa are 16-7 on the year, including three wins over DI programs. Head Coach David Skaff has led the Mavericks to the AVCA Small College Title Match in two of the last three years, winning it all in 2022. This season, CMU has met up with the Gaels twice in Phoenix on opening weekend, dropping both contests by narrow 3-2 margins. The two, three and four flights for the Mavericks have combined to go 50-19 this season, with Riley Daugherty and Lizzy Hood going 17-6 at the twos, Barett Nolan and Ania Swartzendruber going 17-6 at the threes and Jessica Passi and Taylor Scherff going 16-7 at the fours. Daughety and Hood went 2-0 against the Gaels in their first two matches. The two meetings earlier this year were the first ever between the Gaels and Mavericks.

At 14-10 this season, Boise State has won at a solid clip, but has struggled to find a signature win, going 0-7 against ranked opponents this year. This tournament will represent their first home matches of the Spring. Seventh year Head Coach Allison Voigt eclipsed 100 wins this season and looks to be on her way to her fourth consecutive winning season at the helm of the Broncos. This year, Boise's biggest contributors have been the two pair of Allyson Alden and Sharli O'Neil. The seniors have gone 15-8 together this year, one of only two duos to have eclipsed the 10 win mark for the Broncos. The Gaels and Broncos have met five times in program history, including three times last season. The Gaels won their first three meetings (2014, 2016 and 2024) but lost the last two last year, one in Hawaii and one in Boise.

The Gaels will open up the weekend playing Portland at 8 AM Pacific and Bakersfield at noon Pacific on Friday. Saturday will be an early start, as the Gaels will get Colorado Mesa at 7 AM Pacific and Boise State at 1 PM Pacific. All matches can be streamed here. Live stats will be provided here.
