BOISE, ID — Make it five wins in a row for the Gaels (16-13), who downed both Portland (4-9) and Cal State Bakersfield (9-16) to inch closer to their first 20 win season since 2019. The five match winning streak ties the longest in the three year tenure of Head Coach Janice Harrer, as the Gaels won five in a row last season between April 13 and April 25.
Squaring off with Portland first, the Gaels again defeated their conference foe from the north by the same scoreline as their first meeting this season, 4-1. After splitting the fours and twos, including the fourth straight victory by Hannah Glick and Sedona Sherman at that spot, the Gaels polished off the final three points for their seventh win over a conference foe this season. On top of Glick and Sherman picking up their fourth straight win, Angelina Bour and Nya Crump picked up their sixth consecutive W together.
Match two was a bit closer, with the Gaels narrowly edging out the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield, 3-2. Again, Glick and Sherman won their opening match at the fours, and the Gaels dropped the twos. Saint Mary's dropped the fives, but moments later, Bour and Crump picked up their second win of the day to place the decision squarely on the shoulders of the one pair, Allie Cataldo and Angie Bour. The ultra consistent ones from the Gaels dropped a narrow set one 21-19, but rallied back with an emphatic set two victory, 21-15. Coming down to the wire in set three, both pairs matched each other point for point to a 13-13 stalemate. The Roadrunners put the Gaels' backs against the wall, going ahead 14-13, but three straight points from SMC closed out the victory for the Gaels.
Cataldo/Couch, Bour/Crump and Glick/Sherman all went a perfect 2-0 for the day, moving to 19-10, 12-6 and 6-2 on the year respectively. Angelina and Nya have now won seven straight together, while Hannah and Sedona have won five in a row.
The Gaels will play two more tomorrow, taking on Colorado Mesa and Boise State at 7 AM and 1 PM respectively.
