GAELS OUTLOOK

Madrigal and Armstrong Win WCC Weekly Awards…

On Monday, April 28th the West Coast Conference announced their weekly awards with Saint Mary's Eddie Madrigal and Ian Armstrong taking home Player and Freshman of the Week honors. The Gaels have won seven of their last eight games and went 3-1 this past week, standing as one of the hottest teams in the WCC. Madrigal now owns the outright lead for home runs in the WCC with 14 and is putting himself firmly in the Player of the Year conversation. He leads the league in slugging (.717), OPS (1.182), RBI (50), homers (14) and has a .368 batting average good for third highest in the WCC. This is his first career WCC weekly award in his three years as a Gael.

For the second time this season, Ian Armstrong has been named the WCC Freshman of the Week. He finished his four-game week with a .467 batting average, five runs scored, a double, a home run and two RBI. Armstrong became the first SMC freshman to win the weekly award multiple times in a single season since the award was established in 2024.

Season High four Homers vs. LMU…

Despite the cold weather in Moraga this past weekend, the ball flew out of the yard for the Gaels as they finished the weekend with nine home runs and a season high four homers in the series finale on Sunday. Eddie Madrigal led the offensive surge with four homers on the weekend including two in game one's 8-3 win over the Lions for his first career multi-homer game.

Saint Mary's capped the weekend off with a season high four home runs in their 9-4 series finale win. Aiden Taurek homered in the first inning for his fourth of the season. The Gaels then had three home runs over the course of three innings including two in the sixth from Eddie Madrigal and Brian Duroff. Tanner Griffith also homered for just the third time in his career in the fourth inning, hammering a hanging breaking ball into the right field netting.

Around the WCC…

The West Coast Conference got a lot tighter over the weekend as San Diego went to Spokane and took two games against Gonzaga. They now sit in a tie at the top of the table with an 11-4 WCC record. Portland was off this weekend in conference play and then Saint Mary's got another crucial series win, winning two games over LMU at home. The Gaels are now 7-8 in conference action and are just two games within third place.

Pacific got out of last place with two wins over Santa Clara and San Francisco won a pair of games over Pepperdine, sitting at 7-11 in seventh place. Outside of the top three, plenty is up for grabs for the final three spots in the 2025 WCC Tournament. Saint Mary's will head to Stockton and then Gonzaga before finishing the regular season at home against Santa Clara.

Series History…

Saint Mary's will head to Reno for the second consecutive season after taking down the Wolf Pack last season 4-2. Both teams are dead even at 18-18 since 2002 and Saint Mary's is 3-2 in their last five matchups with Nevada. Nevada last won at home in 2022 and had a seven game losing streak to the Gaels from 2015-2018.

ABOUT THE WOLF PACK (Mountain West)

Nevada enters the week with a 25-18 overall record and a 12-9 record in Mountain West action. The Wolf Pack sit in a tie for second place in the Mountain West standings but are in good form, winning five of their last seven games including back-to-back series wins over Washington State and Air Force. Billy Ham and Junhyuk Kwon lead the team offensively with a combined .352 batting average, 28 doubles, 107 hits and 15 home runs. The power is spread out for the Wolf Pack in their lineup as eight different players have at least five home runs on the season. Sean Yamaguchi leads the team in that category with nine homers on the season.

Nevada owns a collective 6.01 ERA with three shutouts and nine saves. Alessandro Castro and Dominic Desch lead the team with four wins each. Right hander Jayce Dobie will get the start though on Tuesday, marking his tenth start of the season. Dobie is 2-2 with a 6.43 ERA and is coming off of one of his best starts of the season, completing five innings allowing just two runs and a season high six strikeouts. Nevada will look for their first home win over Saint Mary's since 2022 as they have won two of the last three matchups with the Gaels.

First pitch for Tuesday's game is slated for 3:05 PM and you can catch all the action live on the Mountain West Network.
