BERKELEY, Calif. — On a sun soaked day in Berkeley, Saint Mary's (12-13) split their pair of contests with ninth ranked Cal (16-6) and San Jose State (9-15), falling to the Golden Bears 4-1, and defeating the Spartans by the very same scoreline. Led by the duo of Angelina Bour and Nya Crump, who went unbeaten in all four sets today, the Gaels now move to 12-6 against unranked opponents this year, and took their first point against a top-10 ranked team this year.
The Golden Bears took an early 4-0 lead, but Angelina Bour and Nya Crump stole the show in the final match of the contest, besting the three pair of Cal on their own sand 22-20, 22-20. The point for the Gaels was their third time scoring against a ranked opponent this year (Hawaii and Washington) and their first time scoring against a top-10 opponent this season. The last time the Gaels scored against a top-10 foe came last season, when they fell to sixth ranked TCU 3-2, with Nya Crump also partially responsible for one of the points, when she paired with now Gael alum Paola Peralta.
The momentum of Bour and Crump's victory over Cal rolled into the 4-1 victory over San Jose State. The opening sets were both split with 21-19 scorelines. Hannah Glick and Sedona Sherman won the four flight, while Clarissa Klein and Chloe Swanson dropped the twos. The Gaels then closed up shop with three straight wins from their ones (Allie Cataldo and Hannah Couch), threes (Angelina Bour and Nya Crump) and fives (Grace Travis and Renee Nachtigall). After going 1-2 against the Spartans last year, the Gaels are now 2-0 against SJSU this year.
With Bour and Crump going 2-0 today, they improved their season record to 8-6, including each of their last three. Cataldo and Couch continue to pace the Gaels, now at 16-9 in the one spot after today's split. They are now 21-14 for their SMC career together, tied for seventh most wins in program history. They are now three wins shy of moving to #1 all-time for wins in the one spot in SMC history.
