GAELS OUTLOOK
Schwarze Earns First Student-Athlete of the Week Honor of 2025-26…
Women's soccer captain
Savannah Schwarze scored her first goal of the 2025 season with a powerful strike from the top of the box in the Gaels 2-2 draw with CSUN last Thursday. Schwarze's goal represented the go-ahead goal at the time as she went on to be named the first Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2025-26 athletic year.
Schwarze was an everyday starter for the Gaels in 2024 and earned her second career All-WCC selection with a team high four assists. She got off to another great start in the team's season opener last week with 90 minutes played and her sixth career goal, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute.
Dramatic 2-2 Draw in Season Opener…
Saint Mary's opened up their 2025 season at home last week against Big West member CSUN. The Gaels outshot the Matadors 18-5 and led by a goal with 16 minutes to play, but CSUN would net the equalizer in the 88th minute to split the points on a dramatic opening day of college soccer.
Captains
Sydney Middaugh and
Savannah Schwarze scored the first two goals of the season for Saint Mary's as they held two leads in the afternoon, but a pesky CSUN squad would answer with goals in the 15th and 88th minute to draw 2-2. SMC freshman
Ashlyn Vaughn was a bright spot off the bench, tallying 61 minutes and recording her first collegiate assist on Schwarze's goal in the second half.
Series History…
For the fifth straight matchup, Saint Mary's will take on Stanford as a top-two team in the nation. The Gaels played host to the Cardinal last season when they were the No. 1 team in the nation, falling 1-0. Stanford has been ranked inside the top-three seven different times during their matchup history with Saint Mary's and the Gaels will look for their first result over the Cardinal since a scoreless draw way back in 2001.
Stanford will bring a ten-match winning streak over Saint Mary's dating back to 2001 into Sunday's match but will first host San Diego State Thursday night, giving the Gaels a chance to get a result against a more fatigued Cardinal team.
ABOUT THE CARDINAL (ACC)
Following a 2024 season in which it reached its second consecutive NCAA College Cup, Stanford was picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference according to the league's coaches. In addition to the preseason poll, the coaches also voted on a Preseason All-ACC team. Redshirt senior Andrea Kitahata was named to the 14-player squad.
Stanford entered the season as the 7th ranked team in the nation and will host the Gaels Sunday afternoon now ranked second after outscoring their opponents 15-1 over their first three games of the season. The Cardinal generated 30 shots Thursday evening in their 3-0 win over San Diego State to improve to 3-0 on the season. Paul Ratcliffe enters his 23rd season leading the program.
Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM with the game being streamed live on ACCNX. Tickets can be bought at the gate or at gostanford.com. Be sure to follow your Gaels on Facebook, Instagram, and X to get all the latest Saint Mary's athletics updates and information.
