MORAGA, Calif. - After an eight-save performance against Santa Clara this past Saturday, redshirt junior goalkeeper Kate Plachy has been named this week's department Student Athlete of the Week. This is now Plachy's third time winning the award in her career, and the second consecutive women's soccer representative after senior forward Brooklyn Smith earned the honor for her game-winner against San Diego just a week ago.
After falling to ten players early in the second half due to a red card, Plachy made seven saves to deny the Broncos the three points despite 20 second-half shots, leading the Gaels to their first point at Buck Shaw Field since 2008. Plachy and the Gaels continue to stand as one of the best defenses in the country, leading the WCC with a 0.44 Goals-Against-Average and tied for the NCAA Division I lead with 11 shutouts this season.
The Gaels will head to Stockton this coming Wednesday to take on the Pacific Tigers at 6 p.m. Saint Mary's will then return to Moraga on Saturday to take on the Seattle Redhawks at 1 p.m. Both matches can be streamed live on ESPN+, with tickets available for Saturday's match available for purchase HERE.
OTHER NOMINEES: Sam Baumuller (MGOLF), Paulo Hugo Etchecoin (MTEN), Harry Irwin (MWP), Sawyer Jones (MSWIM), Antonie Kelnarova (VB), Luke Schaefer (MSOC), Eliza Taylor (WSWIM)
