MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team went 4-1 this past week with wins over Bakersfield and San Jose State and even though the offense erupted for 43 runs, sophomore right hander Sam Kretsch was nails on the mound in his three appearances as he earned his first two career saves and a win to be named this week's Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week.
Kretsch made three appearances during the Gaels' five-game week and contributed to three separate decisions. He earned his first career save late into Tuesday night, completing the 12th inning in a 10-8 win over Bakersfield. Kretsch then came on in another extra-inning affair in game one with San Jose State, striking out the side in the top of the 13th to set up a walk-off win after an RBI single from Makoa Sniffen. He closed out the week with his most impressive outing of the season, completing three scoreless in relief with a career high six strikeouts to earn a second save over the Spartans.
The department weekly award is the first of his career as Kretsch and the Gaels will kick off a four-game week starting on Tuesday against UC Davis before heading south for a three-game set with San Diego State.
