MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's baseball catcher Ian Armstrong etched his name into the program record book last week and was named the Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week.
Armstrong helped the Gaels to a 4-1 week with wins over Bakersfield and a West Coast Conference sweep over Santa Clara to improve to 22-14 this season. Armstrong finished the five-game week with a .529 batting average, going 9-for-17 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and a home run. Armstrong recorded the program's second ever cycle in Sunday's series finale win over Santa Clara, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Armstrong doubled in the top of the 13th to tack on to the Gaels lead in what would end up as a wild 15-11 extra-inning victory for Saint Mary's. The double went down as his eighth of the season and also helped complete just the second cycle in program history, just four days after teammate Ian Josephson completed the feat in the team's midweek win against Bakersfield.
Armstrong is now hitting .331 on the season as the Gaels have won a season high five consecutive games and sit in second place in the WCC with an 8-4 record. Saint Mary's will stay in Moraga for the weekend and host WCC rival Gonzaga starting on Friday, April 17. Tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets and you can catch all the weekend action live on ESPN+.
OTHER NOMINEES: Inigo Izuzquiza (MGOLF), Sofia Daryaie/Sophie Stanton (WTEN), Finn Dyer/Sam Simmonds (MTEN), Madeline Haun (SB), Hannah Couch/Isla Johnson (BVB), Mychaela Parker (WT&F), Spencer Wirshing (MT&F)
