MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's men's water polo program and head coach James Lathrop have welcomed its most recent addition, Jake Nielsen, a goalkeeper out of San Diego.
Nielsen spent three years competing for Torrey Pines High School and nine years competing for La Jolla United Water Polo Club. During that time, he received second-team All-Coastal League honors and was named the Torrey Pines defensive player of the year. In his senior season, Nielsen's team won the San Diego CIF Division I Championship, and he earned the CIF Sportsmanship Award. That year, he tallied 254 saves, ranking him 27th nationally, and also recorded 60 steals. After competing at the 6-8 Sports Seattle Showcase, Nielsen received the Top +/- Goalie Award.
Nielsen joins fellow goalkeeper Federico Castrucci, as the two will look to lead the team to success in the cage.
