PORTLAND, Ore. - Redshirt freshman Trey Tuyo had himself quite a week at the 117th Oregon Amateur Championship in Portland, finishing as the runner-up in the state championship after making his way through seven rounds of competition at Riverside Golf & Country Club. Tuyo fell 4 & 3 to former Oregon Duck Nigel Lett who was a member of the Ducks 2016 NCAA National Championship squad and a 2017 graduate.
Tuyo redshirted for the Gaels this past season but will look to be a crucial piece of the 2026-27 squad after Saint Mary's got back to regionals for the first time since 2019. Tuyo started his week with a t-30th finish at 6-over-par to get inside the initial cut line back on Tuesday. After advancing to the match play portion of the tournament, Tuyo secured match victories in the round of 64, 32 and 16 to get into the quarterfinals. He birdied the par four 16th to go up one in his round of 16 match and then closed with back-to-back pars to secure his spot in the final eight.
Tuyo had a flair for the dramatic in his quarter and semifinal matches, recording late birdies in each match to secure the wins. Tuyo birdied 17 to seal his quarterfinal victory and then birdied 18 to end the day Friday, sinking a 15-footer to send himself into the 36-hole championship match with Nigel Lett. Tuyo found himself down just one through the first 18 holes but Lett was able to lock up the championship with a four hole lead through 15 after recording pars on 14 and 15.
Full match scores and leaderboards can be found HERE or at oga.org.
Tuyo and the Gaels will return to action in the fall and start their campaign for their second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance looking for back-to-back regional appearances for the first time since 2018/19.
