WSOC | Saint Mary’s Extends Season Opening Shutout Streak to Program-Record Four in Draw with No. 14 Georgetown

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's women's soccer team closed out its three-game homestand with a scoreless draw against No. 14 Georgetown on Sunday afternoon. The Gaels have now opened the season with four straight shutouts, a first in program history.

Both sides generated multiple dangerous opportunities throughout the full 90, as the Hoyas narrowly outshot the Gaels 10-8, but both defenses held strong to preserve the scoreless affair.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ashlyn Vaughn tested the Hoyas' goalkeeper early on, with her first goalscoring opportunity coming in the ninth minute, when Molly Silva found the sophomore forward just outside of the 18-yard box. Vaughn fired a shot just wide to the right of the goal. Just five minutes later, Brittany Holden found Vaughn, who drove the ball into the 18-yard box and launched a shot that forced a save from the Georgetown goalkeeper. The Gaels went on to outshoot the Hoyas 6-3 in the opening half, but were unable to find the back of the net to take the lead.

Saint Mary's continued to attack in the second half of the matchup. After Soraya Souvanaphong collected the ball following a Georgetown corner in the 55th minute, she quickly found Vaughn on the right side of the field. Vaughn carried the ball just outside of the 18-yard box and fired a shot that went wide to the left of the post. Holden maintained the pressure after the Gaels were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in the 61st, but her attempt went wide to the left.

Souvanaphong recorded three saves in goal as Saint Mary's secured its fourth straight shutout of the season. The Gaels' defense remained strong throughout the match, with defenders Anna Emperador, Aleyiah Schexnayder, Molly Silva, and Faith Gunter each playing the full 90 minutes to help hold the Hoyas scoreless. Midfielder Maddie Lucas and forward Ashlyn Vaughn also logged 90-minute efforts for the Gaels. With the draw, the Gaels extended their unbeaten streak to ten consecutive matches, marking the third-longest streak in program history. Saint Mary's also extended its unbeaten streak at home to 17 straight matches, adding to that program record.

GAME NOTES

Today's draw spelled a bit of history for the Gaels, who have now started the season with four straight shutouts, a new program record.
The draw also moved the Gaels to 10 straight contests unbeaten, the third longest unbeaten streak in program history, and added to their current home unbeaten streak, which sits at 17 straight.
The Gaels remain the only team in the West Coast Conference to not concede a goal this year, and are one of just 19 teams in the nation to have not conceded a goal.
Goalkeeper Soraya Souvanaphong recorded a career-high three saves today in her fourth straight shutout effort.
Seven of the Gaels starting 11 played the entire 90 minutes, including Souvanaphong and Faith Gunter, neither of whom have left the field once this season.

Saint Mary's will return to action when they travel to Los Angeles to take on USC on Sunday, August 30 with kickoff slated for 2:00 p.m.
