COLUMN ARCHIVE

The dawning of a new Spring Term on campus brings with it the conclusion of winter sports and the startup of outdoor seasons.

Expectations are high for the showings of the men's and women's basketball teams in the upcoming West Coast Conference Tournament March 4 to 8 at Santa Clara University's Leavey Center. Randy Bennett has the men's team battling Pepperdine for pivotal #2 seed. As for the women's team, head coach Michelle Jacoby has done an outstanding job with a group of very talented, but young players. Needless to say, we're looking forward to watching both of our exciting teams battle for the WCC Tournament title.

Speaking of the tournament, I would like to thank the 160+ alumni, parents, and friends that have already purchased tickets to the event. Tickets can still be purchased through the Santa Clara Ticket Office (408-554-4660) if you're interested in attending. Our Alumni Office will be hosting one or more events during the tournament - look for more information to be released after March 1.

Join me in wishing outstanding first Gael seasons to head coaches Jedd Soto of baseball and Megumi Takasaki of softball. Both have infused excitement and optimism in to their programs. I encourage you to show support for what they are doing by attending a baseball or softball game soon.

And speaking of new people on the job - Mark Chiarucci, former Gael baseball hurler and recently-appointed director of special events in the Advancement Department, reminds everyone that the annual Luxury Car Drawing presented by Stead Motors unfolds on Sunday, Feb. 22 in the Soda Center.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Gael Athletic Scholarship Fund (GASF). The grand prize is a 2004 Jeep Liberty or $20,000 cash. Other prizes include $1,000 and $500. If you haven't yet purchased your tickets and the opportunity to drive a new vehicle, please call Mark at (925) 631-4803. Tickets are $150 each and you need not be present to win.

Go Gaels!
