March 5, 2002

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's College of California Director of Athletics, Carl R. Clapp announced today the hiring of Gene Mirra as the College's first head strength and conditioning coach. Mirra, who begins on March 1, 2002, will have the opportunity to implement a strength and conditioning program that will help bring Saint Mary's Athletics to the next level.

"Gene is our first, full-time strength and conditioning coach. We are ecstatic to have him join the team and welcome the experience, expertise, and coaching ability he will bring to our student-athletes. We believe we can make great strides in the area of strength and conditioning under Gene's leadership," stated Clapp.

Mirra comes to Saint Mary's from the University of California at Berkeley where he has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach since 1999. At California he was responsible for the physical development of the rugby, baseball, lacrosse, diving, gymnastics and both the men's and women's soccer teams. He also assisted in the training of the football, basketball and swimming programs.

A 1998 graduate from San Jose State University with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology, Mirra served as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant for the Spartans from 1998-99. At SJSU he assisted with the successful implementation of the strength and conditioning program, and was solely responsible for tennis and men's soccer. During that time he began his master's degree in Sports Management, at San Jose State, which will be completed in 2002.

Mirra will implement and oversee a strength and conditioning program for the 15 intercollegiate sports at Saint Mary's. The 15 sports include football, women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, golf, men's and women's tennis, women's lacrosse and women's rowing.
