Saint Mary's College has announced that $50,000 has been raised for the Alison Huber/Diane Whipple Endowed Women's Lacrosse Scholarship. The scholarship drive was launched last fall with the goal of creating an endowed scholarship in the names of these two women, who both played integral roles in the women's lacrosse program at the College. The cost to fund one endowed scholarship is $650,000 and a goal was set to raise the first $50,000 by June 30.
"This scholarship will provide building blocks to support our student-athletes for generations to come and is a living memorial to Alison Huber and Diane Whipple," said Ron Turner, Major Gifts Officer, who is leading the scholarship drive.
Huber was a member of the lacrosse team from 1999-2001 and passed away in August of 2001. Whipple was the first head coach in the program's history and died in January of 2001. Both were highly respected and loved members of a program that was first elevated to varsity status in 2000.
With the achievement of this goal, a few thousand dollars of grant-in-aid funds will be available to the team during the 2003-04 academic year.
"This scholarship will open doors for future women to obtain a quality education while competing in this sport at the highest level," commented head coach Debra Holland. "We're very appreciative of everyone who has given thus far and hope that more individuals will come forward to support this effort."
