The Saint Mary's women's soccer team had the most student-athletes honored at the inaugural President's Scholar-Athlete Luncheon with 10.
April 23, 2018 MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's athletics department hosted its first annual President's Scholar-Athlete Luncheon on Wednesday at the Soda Activity Center, honoring SMC student-athletes and the professors who have helped guide their academic careers.
75 student-athletes from all 16 varsity sports were honored at the inaugural lunch. The luncheon was open to Gaels who carry a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.25 or higher as a current sophomore, junior or senior. Each student-athlete was encouraged to invite a professor to attend the luncheon with them as recognition for the role they have played in their academic pursuits. Saint Mary's President Dr. James A. Donahue was also present at the luncheon and gave a keynote address.
"Having an event like this is a great way to recognize the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes," said Saint Mary's Director of Athletics and Recreation Mike Matoso. "These students have represented Saint Mary's at the highest level on the field, and now we honor how well they have represented the Gaels in the classroom."
Women's soccer led all Saint Mary's teams with 10 attendees at the luncheon. The men's soccer team had the highest number of recognized student-athletes among men's teams with nine players honored.
