Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's College Department of Athletics and Recreational Sports today announced the combining of the cheerleading and dance teams for the 2003-04 year. The new team will continue to provide support and entertainment at athletic and school events. Auditions for the new team will be held on Thursday, May 1 and Friday, May 2 from 6-15-8:30 pm in McKeon Pavilion. The requirements for potential applicants consist of being enrolled full-time at Saint Mary's and a passion to perform.
"We're looking for a diverse group of young women with different backgrounds in cheer and dance to create a versatile team," said Dianna Rowley, head spirit team coach. "Our mission will be to provide entertainment and generate fan support through cheers, dances, and crowd interaction. The new team will have 18-20 members and will represent Saint Mary's College in a positive and professional manner."
The team will have responsibilities to both Athletics and ASSMC. The team will perform at such events as home and away athletic contests, rallies, orientations, fundraising activities, and other activities as requested. Entertainment will include sideline chants, bumpers, and quality performances showcasing a variety of styles; from pom to jazz to hip hop.
Students auditioning should be able to perform a selection of the following: toe-touches, splits, leaps, double pirouettes, fouette turns, axels, sideline chants and cheers, pom routines, jazz routines, and hip hop routines. In addition to technique and flexibility, the team will be responsible for maintaining a high fitness level.
