Saint Mary's Holds 17th Gael Awards Show

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's athletic department honored its student-athletes Sunday at the 17th annual Gael Awards Show at the Soda Center on campus. The event honors SMC student-athletes, top performers and noteworthy performances athletically and academically from the past year.

"It is always a good, fun moment to have all the student-athletes together and honor this year's achievements," said Saint Mary's Director of Athletics and Recreation Mike Matoso. "The student-athletes do tremendous work in their sports, in the classroom and in the community, so it is a great moment to celebrate all of their accomplishments throughout the year."

Here is a snapshot of all the award winners in this year's awards show:

GAEL CUP- Men's Basketball
For the third consecutive year, men's basketball took home the Gael Cup after setting a program record 30 wins in 2017-18. Handed out to the team with the highest winningest percentage, men's basketball achieved a record setting year which saw a 30-6 overall record and an appearance in the NIT Quarterfinals.

MIKE GIBBONS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD - Mary Whisler
Recognizing an unpaid employee who has shown great dedication to the student-athletes of Saint Mary's College, this year's volunteer of the year went to women's soccer's Mary Whisler. Whisler is a volunteer on the coaching staff and continues to have a major impact in technical and tactical areas.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES OF THE YEAR - Ken Waldichuck and Wilkerson/Young
Ken Waldichuk set a new career high with 14 strikeouts with zero walks in 7 ÃÆ'à € 'à ‚¬  'ÃÆ' ' ¬  'ÃÆ'à € ' ' ¬  ' ¢ ' ¬ ¦" innings against first place San Francisco, leading the Gaels to a 5-4 win over the Dons on April 8th. He recorded each of the first six outs of the game with strikeouts.

Madi Wilkerson and Sienna Young helped the Gaels take down No. 13 ranked Stanford on the road on April 8th. Coming from behind to win in three sets, Wilkerson and Young gave the Gaels a 3-2 win in a match televised on the Pac-12 Network.

TEAM PERFORMANCES OF THE YEAR - Men's Basketball and Beach Volleyball
On the men's side, men's basketball took home the Team Performance of the year honor for its road win over No. 13 Gonzaga, 74-71. The Gaels overcame a nine-point deficit for their 13th straight win during their magical 19-game win streak.

Beach volleyball captured the Female Team Performance for its road win at nationally-ranked No. 13 Stanford. The Gaels earned victories at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 pairs to beat the Cardinal.

TODD OGORZELEC STUDENT EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR - Andrew DeMaria
Andrew went out of his way to ask for work the Compliance office all while also working as a student in the Joseph Alioto Recreation Center and with game management doing game day tasks. DeMaria did a tremendous amount of work for compliance last summer.

Bryan Vargas GAEL SPIRIT AWARD - Matt Carroll
The Bryan Vargas Gael Spirit Award recognizes the efforts of a College staff or faculty member who has made significant contributions to Saint Mary's Athletics. Over the years, Matt Carroll has made a large impact in athletics through his work with Sodexo.

NEWCOMERS OF THE YEAR - Filippo Zattarin and Kimiko Zapanta
The Newcomer of the Year awards are presented to a male and female freshman or transfer who has made a tremendous first year impact on his or her team this season.

Zattarin started in all 17 games for the Gaels as a true freshman. He was tied for first on the team with four assists and led the team in minutes played. He was named to the All-WCC Freshman team.

As a true freshman, Zapanta has started in all 43 games so far this season and leads the Gaels in batting average. Zapanta currently has 37 stolen bases. She broke the WCC record for steals in a season and is the only freshman in the top 25 in the country.

LASALLIAN SERVICE AWARD - Men's Soccer

The Lasallian service award was created to recognize a team's outstanding commitment to the Saint Mary's mission and their dedication to helping the local community.

Men's soccer partnered with Team Impact and young Quentin Rios. Quentin is a young man who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer when he was not quite three years old and the men's soccer team has brought Quentin, now seven, into their program and made him a part of their team. The Gaels held a signing day and welcomed him to campus with a big show of support from everyone in athletics.

HIGHEST TEAM GPA - Women's Cross Country/Track
Women's Cross Country/Track earns this year's Team GPA award with a cumulative GPA of 3.429.

ATHLETES OF THE YEAR - Jock Landale and Stella Beck
The Athlete of the Year Award is presented to a male and female student-athlete who has experienced tremendous athletic success in his or her sport this season.

Jock Landale averaged 21.1 points and 10.2 rebounds his senior season. He was named to the AP All-American Second Team, was a Top-5 Finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, a Top-10 finalist for the Citizen Naismith Trophy, a Top-15 Finalist for Wooden Award and was named WCC Player of the Year. He was also named to the NABC First Team, the USBWA Second Team All-American and was a member of USBWA All-District IX Team.

He finished his career with 1,620 career points which places him 6th on the all-time scoring list, 817 career rebounds which is fifth most in history, and his 301 made field-goals this season are the most in program history. Landale scored 731 points in his senior campaign, which passes Omar Samhan's 724 for most points in a single season in program history.

Stella Beck was named first team All-West Coast Conference for the second time in her career after leading the Gaels in scoring, steals and free-throw shooting in her final collegiate season. She was also named to the WCC All-Academic First Team for the third time in her career. Beck finished her career 10th on the all-time scoring list at Saint Mary's with 1,439 career points. She joined the 1,000 career points club on Nov. 24 against UC Santa Barbara, becoming the 21st Gael to accomplish the feat. She had 10 games with at least 20 points, including a career-high 31 points versus Pacific on Jan. 20.

McKEON AWARDS - Joey Fiske and Stella Beck
The George R. McKeon Senior student-athlete award is presented to a graduating student-athlete who has achieved noteworthy success in the classroom, in their sport and in extracurricular activities. This award is given by the College and will be recognized at Commencement.

Joey Fiske has been a four year starter in the outfield for the Gaels. As a freshman he finished third on the team in steals and made just one error all season. As a sophomore, he led the team in steals and was second on the team in batting average. His success continued as a junior when he led the team in stolen bases and runs and was second in batting average.

He is currently in the middle of his senior campaign and sits second on the team in hits, runs and stolen bases. Fiske also carries a tough load academically as a Biology major, but he maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.502, earning him a spot on the WCC All-Academic Team as a sophomore and junior.

Beck made an immediate impact on the women's basketball program when she arrived in Moraga as a freshman. She led the conference in field goal percentage, earning her Newcomer of the Year award for the WCC and a place on the All-WCC Freshmen Team.

Her success continued her sophomore year, earning a spot on the All-WCC Second Team, again leading the conference in field goal percentage. Her junior and senior years she was named to the All-WCC First Team, while leading the team in scoring and rebounding her junior year, and scoring, steals and free throw percentage her senior year. Beck also excelled academically, earning spots on the WCC All-Academic Team sophomore, junior and senior year, with a cumulative GPA of 3.632 in Psychology.

COACH OF THE YEAR - Scott Hardy
The Brother Agnon Coach of the Year award is given to the head coach that exceeded expectations this season and is voted on by their peers.

Coach Hardy has been at the helm for the Gaels for 17 years and continues to have success in his program. The team played in 12 tournaments this year, with 10 top-10 finishes, seven of those in the top five, with one win at Inverness and a second place finish at the WCC Tournament.
