Four Saint Mary's Athletes Garner College Commencement Awards

May 2, 2003

Moraga, CA - At the 2003 Saint Mary's College Commencement, four Saint Mary's student-athletes will receive Commencement Awards for their success in the classroom during their time at Saint Mary's. Football player Nathan Frowsing will receive two Commencement Awards, while women's tennis player Catalina Fillol, women's lacrosse player Courtney Nelson, and men's tennis player Thomas Burgemeister will receive one award each.

Frowsing will garner the James L. Hagerty Award and the George R. McKeon Award. The James L. Hagerty Award was named in honor of the illustrious professor of Philosophy at Saint Mary's College for thirty-seven years and alumnus of the Class of 1919. Awarded to a graduating Senior with an outstanding scholastic record in the School of Liberal Arts.

Frowsing, along with Catalina Fillol will receive the George R. McKeon Award. This award is named in memory of this noted Bay Area developer, after whom the College's McKeon Basketball Pavilion is named. Presented to one male and one female student, who are distinguished both as outstanding athletes and scholars.

Courtney Leigh Nelson will be honored with the St. Thomas Aquinas Award which is named for the celebrated thirteenth-century philosopher, theologian, and Doctor of the Church. This award is given to a graduating senior with an outstanding scholastic record as an Integral Program major.

Thomas Burgemeister will receive the Brother U. Jerome Griffin, F.S.C. Award which was named in honor of the revered Brother Jerome Griffin who was a professor of Economics and Dean of the School of Economics and Business Administration at Saint Mary's College for fourteen years. This award is presented to a graduating senior with an outstanding scholastic record in the School of Economics and Business Administration.
