Gael Student-Athletes Participate in Community Service Project

May 18, 2002

Moraga, CA - Over 100 Saint Mary's College student-athletes and coaches joined forces with the town of Moraga to participate in a community service project named "Moraga the Beautiful Day" on Saturday, May 18. Members of the football, women's basketball, women's soccer, and women's tennis teams rolled up their sleeves with members of the community to work on the Moraga Commons park and nearby walking trails.

The volunteers worked from 9:00 am to noon cleaning the park, staining and painting benches, picnic tables and playground equipment in addition to spreading large amounts of bark and mulch along the walking trails and surrounding fitness stations.

"It's fulfilling to be able to give back to a community that has supported our athletic programs," commented junior football player Chris Tillery. "We appreciate the community encouragement we receive from the town of Moraga and we're happy to help out any way we can."

This is one of the many ways Saint Mary's student-athletes donate time and energy for projects in the community. Many members of the Gael Athletics community regularly donate their time through reading programs, mentoring children, hosting free sports clinics, and visiting the Oakland Children's Hospital.
