Six Saint Mary's Student Athletes Garner WCC All-Academic Honors

San Bruno, CA - Following the conclusion of the 2003 West Coast Conference spring schedule, five Saint Mary's student-athletes were named to the WCC All-Academic Team. Highlighting the list is three-time WCC All-Academic honoree Thomas Burgemeister from the men's tennis team. Joining Burgemeister from the men's tennis team is Filip Sarovic, from women's tennis Catalina Fillol and Valerie Verrier, from women's rowing is Breezy Jackson, Dane Dobrinich from baseball, and Joe Lanza from golf also garnered academic honors.
The 2003 West Coast Conference Spring All-Academic teams honor some of the league's finest examples of the consummate scholar-athlete. At the completion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each of the participating sponsored sports. To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials, and have sophomore athletic and academic standing.
Burgemeister garnered his third selection on the all-academic team after finishing his career at SMC with a 3.83 GPA in Business. Burgemeister was also a First Team All-WCC selection in singles and an Honorable Mention All-WCC selection in doubles following the 2003 season. Filip Sarovic garnered his first selection on the all-academic team after finishing his career with a 3.30 in Business Administration. On the women's tennis side, Fillol garnered her second straight WCC All-Academic selection and Verrier is awarded with her first such award. Fillol finished her days at Saint Mary's with a 3.34 GPA in Psychology and Verrier maintains a 3.25 GPA in Economics.
Baseball's Dane Dobrinich also garnered his second straight WCC All-Academic selection. The junior pitcher carries a 3.36 GPA as a Business Administration major. Breezy Jackson's selection to the all-academic team follows her selection as a 2003 First Team All-WCC Women's Rowing team. Jackson carries a 3.62 GPA in Environmental Science. Joe Lanza rounds out this year's list of Saint Mary's student athletes on the WCC All-Academic Team. Lanza, who finished third at the 2003 WCC golf championships and was a First Team All-WCC selection, carries a 3.70 GPA.
