Saint Mary's Athletics Launches Silver Gaels Club

Aug. 17, 2001

The Saint Mary's College Department of Athletics and Recreational Sports has announced the creation of the "Silver Gaels Club" for citizens 55 years and older. The club, which will host its first event on September 4, aims to build a relationship between Saint Mary's College and senior citizens of the community.

"We're extremely excited about the opportunity to attract local citizens to this beautiful campus," said Andy McDowell, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Media Relations. "We think this age group is an untapped market and we hope this program will get more people involved with Saint Mary's College."

The first meeting of the club will be a breakfast on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 a.m. in the Soda Activity Center. The keynote speaker will be George Clark, a Saint Mary's alumnus (1966) and avid college football historian, who will give an entertaining presentation of the great Gael football teams of the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's. Head football coach Tim Landis will also give a preview of the upcoming season and his thoughts about the legendary teams of the past.

The Master of Ceremonies will be longtime Golden State Warriors public address announcer, and current Saint Mary's men's basketball announcer, Dick Callahan. Members of the Saint Mary's College Athletic Department, including head coaches and Director of Athletics Carl R. Clapp, will also be present. The cost to attend the breakfast is $10 and persons wishing to attend are asked to RSVP to Andy McDowell, at (925) 631-4699 by Wednesday, August 29.

Membership to the club is open to anyone 55 years or older. For a $40 annual membership fee, members will receive a Silver Gaels polo shirt, discounted admission to home football and basketball games, complimentary admission to baseball, soccer, softball, and volleyball contests, and discounted admission to the Hearst Art Gallery and the Saint Mary's Performing Arts events. In addition, members will be invited to four Silver Gaels events during the year and will receive quarterly Silver Gaels newsletters. Persons wishing to join the club can do so at the breakfast or call Andy McDowell.
