Hieta joined the Gaels during the 2022 volleyball season as an assistant. He has been around the Bay Area and the sport of volleyball for years, helping out at the youth level.
Hieta spent six seasons as the head coach of the boys volleyball program at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, his alma mater. He managed all aspects of the program while at College Park High, and led them to the NCS Division I Championship in 2022, just the second in program history. His club experience dates back to 2014, where he was at the East Bay Volleyball Academy on the boys side and worked with the 15-18 age groups.

As a volleyball player himself, Hieta tallied over 600 kills across three seasons at BYU, and added 189 blocks. He was an all-league selection in high school when it came to volleyball, and also lettered in soccer at Colelge Park High. Hieta played professionally in Finland from 1993-95 following his time at BYU.
