Moraga, CA (March 21)- Stanford (17-6) used a five-run third inning to cruise to an 11-3 victory over the Saint Mary's (10-15) baseball team in a non-conference game on Tuesday. John Gall was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cardinal.
Saint Mary's struck the first blow with a single run in the first inning. After loading the bases on a single by Brett Wayne, a walk to Mark Teahen and a single by Jason Waugh, Tom Nichols produced a two-out RBI single to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead after one inning.
The lead was short lived, as Stanford posted five runs in the third inning. Eric Bowden (3-2) relieved starter Nick Wilcox in the top of the third for Saint Mary's and could not record an out. He faced five Cardinal hitters in the inning, allowing four runs on five hits and before giving way to J.G. LaRochette. Joe Borchard, the first batter LaRochette faced, doubled to drive in Gall for the fifth run of the inning. LaRochette retired the next three Cardinal hitters to end the inning.
Stanford extended the lead to 7-1 by adding two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Saint Mary's answered with a single run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 7-2. Stanford put the game out of reach by scoring two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, making the score 11-3. Saint Mary's tallied its final run in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.
For Saint Mary's, Tom Nichols continued to carry a hot bat, he finished the day 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Nichols has hit safely in nine of the last ten games.
Stanford had six players with multiple hits in the game. Leading the way was Gall with three hits while Craig Thompson, Eric Bruntlett, Edmund Muth, Joe Borchard and Andy Topham each had two hits apiece.
