GAELS OUTLOOK
Damozonio Records Career High 9 Strikeouts in Shutout Win…
Senior right hander John Damozonio has been an absolute stud for the Gaels as their Friday starter this season and put together a career outing on Friday against Portland, recording a career high nine strikeouts in six innings of work contributing to a 3-0 shutout win over the Pilots.
Damozonio has completed six full innings four different times this season and shares the conference lead with four wins. He also owns a career low 2.37 ERA through his seven starts this season. He leads the team with 40 strikeouts and 38.0 innings pitched while holding opposing hitters to just a .221 average at the plate. Saint Mary's has not had a pitcher with double-digit wins in a season since 2019.
Mettam Paces Gaels with 8 Hits in 4-Game Week…
Senior shortstop Jared Mettam has been a steady bat for the Gaels at the bottom of the lineup and was that again and more this past week, tallying eight hits, a home run and a team high six RBI over his four game-week against UCSB and Portland. Mettam climbed his season average to .333 and also has the current active team lead with a five-game hit streak.
Mettam went 3-for-3 with a season high three RBI in the team's 10-4 midweek win over the Gauchos before recording five hits in Portland. He combined for four hits over the final two games of the series including a pair of RBI singles in game two. The Half Moon Bay native also played a great shortstop, recording six putouts without an error in his four games.
Staff Day Leads Gaels to 10-4 Win over UCSB…
Saint Mary's head coach Eric Valenzuela established a staff day for the Gaels in their midweek against UC Santa Barbara which featured nine pitchers in nine innings. The plan clearly worked as the Gaels staff had one of their best collective games of the season, holding the Gauchos to four runs off seven hits while striking out eight batters.
Sophomore right hander Lukas Sarantos made his second start of the season and got credit for his first win of 2026 after sitting the Gauchos down in order to start the game. Six of the nine pitchers used recorded a scoreless frame including Diego Emerling, Finn Chapman, Jake Nobles, David Roberts and Sam Kretsch. The last time Saint Mary's threw nine pitchers, one for each inning, was in a 9-3 defeat to Cal during the 2023 college baseball season.
Series History…
Saint Mary's and Cal have split each of their last four matchups, a pair of home-and-home series in 2024 and 2025. Last season, the Gaels dropped their home matchup with the Golden Bears 13-7 but bounced back with a great bullpen outing to down the Golden Bears 10-4 in late April. Saint Mary's is 13-18 against Cal dating back to the 2000 season and will look for its first two-game win streak over the Golden Bears since winning consecutive games in 2021 and 2022.
Saint Mary's is riding a nine-game win streak over Pacific dating back to 2023. Over the nine wins, six have come at home and three on the road in Stockton including a conference sweep of the Tigers last year in 2025. Runs have been plentiful for the Gaels over the last nine games against the Tigers as they are averaging 10.8 runs per game during the win streak. Pacific will look for its first win over Saint Mary's since 2022 and its first road win in Moraga since 2021.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN BEARS (13-13, 1-8 ACC)
Cal has had a tale of two seasons so far in 2026, making headlines with a 13-4 start heading into ACC action in the middle of March. During that stretch, the Golden Bears secured series wins over UC Irvine, Sacramento State and fellow WCC member San Diego. Cal was sniffing the D1 Baseball Top-25 poll heading into conference play but have since gone a combined 1-10 including a ten-game losing streak that was just recently snapped with a game three win over Wake Forest last weekend.
The 2026 roster for the Golden Bears features 28 new players including 18 true freshmen. On the flip side, Cal returns 17 players from 2025 including 12 pitchers and three starting position players. Leading the charge at the plate is true freshman Jett Kenady and starting catcher Hideki Prather who are both hitting over .360. The duo have also flexed the long ball, combining for 13 home runs including a team high seven from Prather. Redshirt sophomore Gavin Eddy leads the team with four wins on the hill and a 2.50 ERA over his seven starts this season.
Cal ranks 13th in the ACC in team batting average (.279) but third in team ERA (3.84) as the offense has proven costly for their tough start to conference play.
ABOUT THE TIGERS (10-17, 2-4 WCC)
Pacific enters the week at 10-17 and 2-4 in conference play. The Tigers lost both conference opening series to Seattle U and Gonzaga, taking just one game against each. Pacific had a three-game win streak early in the season with wins over Utah Valley and Utah Tech but since have only won consecutive games once, winning back-to-back contests over Sacramento State in a home-and-home series earlier this month.
Pacific is one of four teams in a logjam at 2-4 in the conference standings along with Saint Mary's, San Diego and Seattle U. The Tigers rank fourth in the WCC with a team batting average of .263 and rank seventh in team ERA at 6.60.
Pacific's lone eligible hitter over .300 so far this season is redshirt sophomore Robert Orr. Orr has been the team's primary shortstop this season and is hitting .333 through his first 27 games. He leads the team in hits (31) and home runs (5) and was featured out of the leadoff spot in the team's series finale win over Gonzaga last weekend.
Tuesday's game against Cal can be streamed on ACCNX while the weekend conference series can be seen live on ESPN+.
