Moraga, CA (April 11) - The Saint Mary's College Athletics Department announced that head women's basketball coach Kelly has resigned from his position to become the head women's basketball coach at Gonzaga University. His appointment at Gonzaga will be effective immediately.
"I'm really sorry to see him go," said Athletic Director Rick Mazzuto. "Kelly's done a great job building this program over the past three years. We're looking forward to finding a quality replacement so the team can continue their commitment to building a winning program at Saint Mary's."
Graves led Saint Mary's to a 66-26 overall record in three seasons, leading the Gaels to three straight 20-win seasons. He led Saint Mary's to a 26-7 record in 1998-99, the most wins in school history, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. In his inaugural year the Gaels posted a 20-9 record overall, 9-5 in West Coast Conference action. That record gave Saint Mary's its first 20-win season since 1990-91 as the team made its first WCC Championship appearance.
Last season, Graves led the Gaels to a 20-10 overall record, 11-3 in WCC action. The 11 conference wins were the most since the 1990-91 season. Saint Mary's advanced to the second round of the Women's N.I.T., defeating Hawaii 75-60 in the first round. The victory over Hawaii marked the 20th win of the season, and the third straight 20-win season. Saint Mary's was defeated by Long Beach State, 73-48, in the second round to the W.N.I.T. in Graves' final game.
Graves will fill the vacancy at Gonzaga University after former head coach Kellee Barney resigned at the conclusion of the 1999-2000 season.
