Saint Mary's Set for First Round Matchup with San Diego…
Saint Mary's will take on San Diego for just the second time this season after meeting once back in January. The Gaels took the lone meeting 57-49 in a defensive slugfest, holding the Toreros to just 49 points on 33% shooting. Addi Wedin and Emily Foy combined for 20 points while Melesungu Afeaki had eight points off the bench for the Gaels.
Saint Mary's led by as many as 18 points in that contest and held off a late USD surge in the fourth, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line over the final ten minutes. The last time Saint Mary's and San Diego met in the conference tournament was back in 2014. The Gaels took that game 60-58 before falling to Gonzaga in the semifinals.
The Gaels will look for their first conference tournament victory since 2023 and the first under head coach Jeff Cammon.
Gaels Finish Conference Play as Top-Rated Defense…
Defense has been the calling card for Saint Mary's all season long as the Gaels ended the regular season allowing a conference best 59.2 points per game, ranking 55th in all of Division I. The Gaels also lead the WCC in three-point defense, holding opponents to 29% from beyond the arc.
Additionally, Saint Mary's is averaging a program-record 10.1 steals per game, ranking second in the conference. They boast two of the top five steal getters in Edie Clarke and Jada Hunter. Clarke leads the team with 66 steals and is just three off the conference lead while Hunter has 63 steals for an average of 2.0 per game.
In their last meeting with San Diego, the Gaels forced 17 turnovers, recorded ten steals and held the Toreros to just 12% from three-point range.
Addi Wedin Goes for Career High 21 pts. vs. Gonzaga…
Addi Wedin popped for a career-high 21 points in the Gaels' 75-67 defeat to Gonzaga last week. Wedin was scoring inside and out as she went 4-for-5 from three-point range and 8-for-15 from the field. She also added five rebounds in her season high 34 minutes played.
Wedin leads the team in three-point shooting this season at 39% and has been on a nice scoring run as of late, averaging just under ten points per game over her last five games. She ranks second on the team with 7.7 points per game and 43% shooting through 31 games played this season.
Series History…
Saint Mary's has been in good form in recent years against San Diego, riding a three-game win streak over the Toreros dating back to last season. The Gaels have won those three games by an average of nine points and have held USD to 63 points or fewer in two of those games.
The two teams will meet in the conference tournament for the first time in over a decade. Saint Mary's defeated San Diego in the 2014 WCC Women's Basketball Tournament 60-58 to advance to the semifinals before falling to Gonzaga.
ABOUT THE TOREROS (10-21, 4-14 WCC)
San Diego had two players earn All-WCC distinction including Kylie Ray and Olivia Owens. Ray was one of the best scorers in the conference, averaging 16 points per game and was named to the All-WCC Second Team while Owens averaged 11.4 points and a team high 5.7 rebounds to earn Honorable Mention status.
The Toreros have lost four of their last five games going into the tournament but did end the regular season on a high note, defeating Pacific 64-59. Hallie Rhodes was the high scorer in that game with 18 points and six boards while Owens recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and ten rebounds. San Diego ranks fifth in defense allowing 64 points per game, but they sit dead last in the conference in scoring at just 57 points per game under first-year head coach Blanche Alverson.
