
LMU Women's volleyball Sweeps Gaels 3-0

Los Angeles, CA, - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (5-20/2-11 WCC) fell to Loyola Marymount, 3-0, (30-21, 30-21, 30-27) in front of 364 on Friday night in Gersten Pavilion. LMU's junior Kristen Gallup led all hitters on the night with 15 kills.
The Lions (15-9 Overall/8-5 WCC) started the night registering a .372 hitting clip as a team to take Game 1 from the Gaels 30-21. LMU took Game 2 by the same score, 30-21, and led two games to none in just under an hour. The Lions ended the evening with a 30-27 win in the third and deciding game.
Carla Vandenbark and Rachel Avilla tied with nine kills each to lead SMC offensively. Avilla was also busy defensively as she and teammate Meagan Smith came up with 10 digs each. The Gaels were held a .131 hitting percentage for the match.
For LMU, junior Laura Gustorf hit .667 (6K-0E-9A) in Game 1 and finished the evening with 10 kills and a .231 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kealani Kimball rounded out the Lions' leading hitters with 14 kills while freshman Jody Carlson led the defensive effort with 14 digs. Gallup's 15 kills not only led the squad but was a match-high as well.
Saint Mary's will close the 2001 season when it travels to Pepperdine on Saturday, November 17. First serve is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
