Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's College women's basketball team will be without the services of sophomore forward Triola Alexander (San Diego, CA) for the upcoming season after suffering a torn right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a pick-up game. Alexander underwent surgery to repair the knee on Tuesday, August 28 and is expected to make a full recovery and return for the 2002-03 season.
"We were expecting Triola to have a break-out year, this season" commented head coach Michelle Jacoby. "The injury was unexpected and she will diffenately be missed. We expect her to have a full recovery and we look forward to getting her back for the 2002-03 basketball season."
Alexander had a break-out game against the University of Texas in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. She scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Gaels to a 68-64 victory over the Lady Longhorns to advance to the second round of the tournament. She averaged 15.5 points per game in the tournament following a 10 point performance, in 16 minutes, against #3-ranked Tennessee in the second round.
Alexander played in all 32 games as a freshman and averaged 4.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game while averaging 12.0 minutes a game. Alexander, who never started a game during her freshman campaign, played a career-high 26 minutes against Cal State Fullerton where she posted a career-high 12 rebounds against the Titans.
Saint Mary's will open the 2001-02 season on the road when it travels to the Virgin Islands to play Florida State on November 18 and Dayton on November 19.
