Moraga, CA - Julie Morris led the way for the Saint Mary's women's basketball team (13-10/7-4 WCC) with 19 points as the Gaels rolled to an 87-65 West Coast Conference victory over San Diego (12-12/3-8 WCC) on Friday night.
Morris connected on 5-of-9 shots from the field, including a 2-for-3 night from three point range. She also hit 7-of-9 attempts from the free throw line. Morris was one of four starters for the Gaels to post double figures on the night. Jermisha Dosty was 7-for-9 from the field en route to 16 points while adding seven rebounds. Katie Davis and Jerkisha Dosty added 15 points each.
San Diego was paced by Janeene Ardensens's game-high 22 points. Ardensen was 5-for-9 from the field, connected on 4-of-7 three point attempts and hit 8-of-9 free throws. Kerri Nakamota and Erin Malich also reached double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Marta Menuez had a game-high 11 rebounds, nine coming on the offensive glass.
Saint Mary's opened an early 8-3 lead but a 6-0 run gave the Toreros an 8-9 lead with 15:10 remaining in the first half. With the score tied at 12, Morris hit a three that would give the Gaels a lead they would not relinquish. Saint Mary's opened its first half lead to as much as 17 points (38-21) with 3:30 remaining until halftime. San Diego cut the lead to 40-27 at the intermission.
Saint Mary's opened its lead to 54-33 at the 14:31 mark of the second half. A 19-9 run, over the next five minutes by the Toreros, cut the lead to 11 points. That would be as close as San Diego would get. SMC would catch fire and doubled the lead to 22 points, 84-62 with 2:13 remaining, before finished the game with an 87-65 advantage.
The Gaels controlled the boards as they out-rebounded the Toreros 43-36. Saint Mary's shot 52.6 percent from the field and help San Diego to 34.4 percent for the game. SMC hit 5-of-8 three point attempts while USD was 8-for-22 from long range.
Saint Mary's will close it 2001-02 home schedule when Santa Clara comes to McKeon Pavilion on Saturday. Seniors Jermisha and Jerkisha Dosty will play their final home game against the Broncos. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m and the game will be televised on Fox Sports in the Bay Area.
