Feb. 28, 2002

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team (7-4) won its third straight after a five-hour contest against UC Davis on Wednesday. Valerie Verrier won her singles match in a tie-breaker after a miraculous comeback to give the Gaels the victory.

Saint Mary's won two-of-three in the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The Gaels and Aggies split the singles events, both winning three. Annie Wolford, playing at the number-one defeated her opponent in two straight sets as did Megan Schulman at the number-four. Catalina Fillol at the number-three, Nicole Hunstock at the number-five and Lindsay Herndon Ortega at the number-six all lost their match in two sets.

Valerie Verrier at the number-two was the last to finish her match due to a great comeback and facility difficulties. Verrier lost the first 3-6 and found herself down 1-4 in the second match before she battled back to win 6-4. She then took the tie-breaker in a thriller, 7-6, to win the match and give the Gaels their seventh victory of the season.

Saint Mary's will host conference rival Santa Clara on Friday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m.
