Softball Finishes Thunderbird Classic, 2-2

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (3-2) completed tournament action at the Canyon Park Thunderbird Classic in St. George, Utah. On Sunday, February 3, the Gaels beat the University of San Diego, 3-2, then fell to Oregon State, 7-0.

In their third game of the tournament, the Gaels took an early lead against San Diego at the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded, junior Laura Connors (Las Vegas, NV) walked to give the Gaels their first run of the game. With one run coming in the third and sixth innings, the Gaels' lead was enough for the win. Sophomore Jennifer Eaton (Palo Cedro, CA) earned the win for the Gaels, pitching five innings with four strikeouts, allowing two hits and one walk. Senior shortstop Kami Gray (Mt. Shasta, CA) led the team at the plate, going 2-for-2, with two walks and two runs scored. Junior Tiffany Redding (Placerville, CA) went 2-for-4, with one RBI.

In their fourth and final game of the tournament, the Gaels lost to Oregon State, 7-0. The only hit for the Gaels came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Turner singled to left center. Crystal Draper had an impressive appearance on the mound for the Beavers, striking out 12-of-19 batters that she faced.

Gray led the Gaels at the plate during the tournament with a .417 batting average. She went 5-for-12, with two RBI, two walks, and three runs scored. Freshman Claudia Williams (Rodeo, CA) posted an impressive .400 batting average, going 4-for-10 with one homerun, one double, two RBI, and two walks. Redding hit .333 for the Gaels, going 5-for-15, with four RBI's.

The Gaels will continue play on Tuesday, February 5, when they travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV. The first pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The Gaels will then play a double-header at Sacramento State on Saturday, February 9. Game time is scheduled for noon.
