Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (11-24) swept two extra inning games from the University of San Diego (8-26) on Monday, March 25. The Gaels won the first game 4-3 in nine innings and then won the nightcap by the same score in eight innings.
In the first game, the Toreros took an early 2-0 lead through the first two innings. The Gaels earned their first run of the game as Tiffany Redding singled off of pitcher Anna Russell and would later score from third on a wild pitch. The Gaels took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning with Kami Gray leading the way with an RBI single that scored Talaya Turner. The Toreros tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Stephanie Bisera.
In the first extra inning of play, the Gaels scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth as Claudia Williams hit a double that sent Gray home. Williams went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI while Gray went 2-for-4 with one walk and one RBI.
Eaton pitched the complete game for the Gaels, allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
In the second game the Toreros jumped to an early 2-0 in the first while the Gaels were held scoreless through five inning. The Gaels took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning, but USD tied it in the bottom of the inning as Mary Ann Cane hit an RBI single off of Jordan Larsen.
In the top of the eigth inning Jordann Bass hit an RBI single to left field for the game-winner that scored Williams. Tiffany Redding was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple and two walks.
Larsen earned her fifth win of the season as she allowed three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
The Gaels will continue action on Wednesday, March 27 as they will visit UC Riverside for a doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
