Box Score

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (13-28) lost a doubleheader to UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, April 17. The Gaels lost the first game 2-1 and then were shutout in the second game 5-0.

While pitcher Jennifer Eaton (Palo Cedro, CA) was able to work her way through bases loaded in the second inning, the Gauchos jumped to an early lead in the top of the third inning. With back to back singles by Ashley Groefsema and Leslie Simien, followed by Julia Tamai's walk, the bases were loaded for Natalie Adame. Adame flied out to right field which allowed Groefsema and Simien to cross the plate.

With a 2-0 Gauchos lead, the Gaels did not get on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning. With Staci Hamaguchi (Lafayette, CA) on third base, Kami Gray (Mt. Shasta, CA) put down a perfect suicide squeeze that scored Hamaguchi. The Gaels were held to only one run as the Gauchos pitcher Loren Thornburg allowed only one run on three hits, with eight strikeouts and one walk.

On the mound for the Gaels Eaton pitched the complete game. She allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.

In the nightcap, the Gaels were held hitless until the sixth inning. Back to back singles from Gray and Tiffany Redding (Placerville, CA) were the only hits earned by the Gaels. Pitcher Katie Junge gave up two hits and two walks, while striking out six for the Gauchos.

Gray led the Gaels at the plate as she combined for 2-for-5, with one RBI and one walk against the Gauchos. She remains the top hitter for the team, improving her batting average to .292.

Sara Wiedlin (San Jose, CA) made her first appearance on the mound in almost two months. Wiedlin pitched five innings for the Gaels, allowing one run on six hits and two strikeouts. Her last outing was on February 23 when the Gaels shutout Cal State Hayward 9-0 on Cottrell Field.

Eaton suffered her second loss of the day as she allowed four runs on six hits in two innings pitched. She falls to 5-15 on the season.

The Gaels will travel to Santa Clara on Sunday, April 21 for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
